Multiple bits of data are simultaneously transmitted in one clock cycle. To give an example, let's say that a movie theater has eight side-by-side entrances (which can be seen as the PATA interface of the hard disk). Then, the cinema will allow 8 people to pass at the same time (that is, transfer multiple bits of data in one clock cycle). This is parallel; when the cinema has only one entry, then it can only allow one person to pass at the same time (ie, transfer 1 bit of data in 1 clock cycle), which we can understand as serial. In fact, to put it more simply, parallelism and serialization are actually the difference between "side by side" and "single go".
