You can then choose any of these 16 devices to listen to.
If bi-directional communication is required, a second board can be added to connect the microcontrollers TX line to the RX line of 16 devices. By using multiple boards, you can create similar configurations for I2C, SPI, and so on.
The internal switch is bi-directional, supporting the voltage between ground and VCC, with low on-resistance and low-turn-off leakage, and to prevent crosstalk, perform a "break-before-make" switch.
The board also emits the chips "enable" pin, which will completely disconnect the common pin (all switches "off") when the pin is high.
